Brooklyn born James Yang was raised in Oklahoma. Upon graduating with a BFA in Communication Arts from Virginia Commonwealth, he entered the illustration marketplace, where his work was soon featured in many top trade publications. In fact, since 1983, he has won over 250 awards, including Best of Show in 2010 from 3x3.
A few of the many major clients using his style include: Amnesty International, World Bank, Simon & Schuster, Parents, Bloomberg, Bankers Trust, BusinessWeek, IBM, JP Morgan Chase Bank, Forbes, Fortune, Harper Collins, Herman Miller, The LA Times, KPMG, Microsoft, Money, NATO, Nabisco, Newsweek, The New York Times, Sony, Showtime, Time Magazine, Sports Illustrated, Golf Digest, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post.
Most recently, James taught at Parsons School of Design. He's also taught and lectured at The School of Visual Arts, Maryland Institute College of Art, Corcoran School of Art, SCAD, The New School and The University of Maryland.
He is always in demand worldwide as a guest lecturer. His first book, Joey and Jet was released to critical acclaim in 2004, followed by Joey and Jet in Space, Puzzlehead in 2009, and James' web strip The Impolite Gentleman, debuted in 2014. He is currently active as a member of the executive board of ICON.
