David Plunkert is a graduate of Shepherd University in West Virginia. He is an art director, designer (print+animation), and illustrator at Spur Design which he co-founded in 1995 in Baltimore. A partial list of clients includes: Adidas, Adobe, The Baltimore Museum of Art, The Criterion Collection, Gatorade, Johns Hopkins U., the Maryland Institute College of Art, Motorola, MTV, National Geographic, Nike, Patton Oswalt, Sony, Baltimore Theatre Project, They Might be Giants, and The U.S. Postal Service.
Plunkert’s illustration work has appeared on the covers of Business Week, The Los Angeles Times Book Review, The New York Times Book Review, and The Wall Street Journal. His August 28th, 2017 cover for The New Yorker titled “Blowhard”, received national media coverage and was named Magazine Cover of The Year by The American Society of Magazine Editors.
Over the years, myriad national illustration/design awards from Communication Arts, Graphis, Print, the New York Type Directors Club, and American Illustration have been bestowed upon him. Plunkert has been awarded numerous silver and gold medals from The Society of Illustrators in New York.
His work is featured in the collections of: The Library of Congress, the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum, the University of California Design Museum, and the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg.
Plunkert has taught graphic design at the Maryland Institute College of Art and at Shepherd University. He has lectured for various AIGA chapters and has served on the Board of Directors of AIGA Baltimore. In 2013 he was inducted into the Alliance Graphique Internationale.
